Security Camera Not Working? Troubleshoot Power, Network and Recording
When a security camera stops working, don’t begin with a factory reset. That can erase settings, interrupt recording or make it harder to recover evidence. First find out whether the device has lost power, lost its network connection or is still online but failing to save footage.
Identify the failure
| Symptom | First checks |
|---|---|
| No status light or response | Approved power supply, breaker, outlet, PoE connection |
| Offline in app | Router status, Wi-Fi coverage, credentials |
| Live view works but no clips | Recording schedule, storage and cloud account |
| Video freezes | Bandwidth, signal strength, NVR load |
| Only night footage fails | IR mode, reflections and power demands |
Check power without creating new hazards
For a plug-in camera, confirm that the power supply matches the manufacturer’s specifications. Inspect accessible cables for damage. Do not open mains-powered equipment or expose live connections to weather. Power-over-Ethernet cameras require a compatible PoE port or injector; a normal Ethernet connection may provide data but no electrical supply.
Separate app failures from camera failures
If your phone says the camera is offline, try checking another device on the same network. Restart the app and inspect router connectivity. An NVR may still record locally when remote access is unavailable. Check the recorder directly where possible before concluding that footage has stopped.
Investigate missing recordings
Look for an inactive recording schedule, failed SD card, full or inaccessible storage, expired subscription or incorrect camera date. Back up important clips before formatting storage or resetting anything. If the camera sees motion but fails to create events, follow our motion detection troubleshooting guide.
Use resets only after narrower checks
Try the manufacturer-recommended restart first. Before a factory reset, document network details, detection zones and account credentials. Confirm that the camera can be paired again, especially if it belongs to a managed or professionally installed system.
When hardware service is likely
Signs such as repeated power cycling, moisture inside a sealed enclosure, damaged connectors or heat-related failure deserve professional assessment. A faulty weather seal often needs more than a software update. For poor picture quality without an outright outage, see blurry camera troubleshooting.
