Why Is My Security Camera Blurry? Diagnose Daytime and Nighttime Problems
A blurry camera recording isn’t always caused by a cheap lens. Condensation, a protective film left in place, poor focus, digital zoom or a weak network connection can make very different problems look identical. The fastest repair begins by comparing a live view with a saved recording.
Determine where the blur appears
| What you see | Likely explanation |
|---|---|
| Soft image all day, close and far | Dirty cover, focus or low-resolution setting |
| Clear by day, washed out at night | Infrared reflection from glass or nearby surfaces |
| Blocky moving subjects | Bitrate, compression or connection issues |
| Fogging inside housing | Seal failure or trapped moisture |
| Only zoomed footage looks bad | Digital magnification of limited pixels |
Clean and inspect safely
Disconnect power if the manufacturer requires it, then use approved lens-cleaning materials on the exposed cover. Check for shipping film, scratches and spider webs. Don’t open a weatherproof housing or use household solvents unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it; doing so can damage seals or coatings.
Compare the original file with the app preview
Some apps automatically choose a lower-resolution stream on slow connections. Inspect a downloaded original clip when available. If the file itself is clear but your phone preview is not, adjust preview quality or investigate connection speed before changing the camera. If the original remains blocky, inspect bitrate, resolution and recorder settings.
Night blur is a different problem
Infrared light can reflect from a window, wall, eave or dust close to the lens and overexpose the scene. Point the camera away from reflective obstacles and try an approved external illuminator if appropriate. See why infrared cameras struggle through glass and our night vision improvement guide.
Know when to replace hardware
Persistent internal condensation, cracked optical covers or focus mechanisms that no longer respond may need servicing or replacement. Save a representative daytime and nighttime clip for support. Avoid assuming that a higher-megapixel camera will fix poor placement; see where to install security cameras first.
