Are Home Security Systems Worth the Money? Work Out the Real Cost

A home security system can be worthwhile, but the answer depends on what it protects and what you expect it to do. A monitored alarm that alerts someone while you’re away serves a different purpose from a camera that records a package delivery. Start with the problem, not the product bundle.

What are you actually buying?

A basic intrusion alarm detects certain events and makes a sound. A connected system can notify your phone. Professional monitoring may provide a response pathway according to the provider’s service terms. Cameras record evidence but do not physically prevent someone from forcing a weak door. None of these can guarantee that a burglary will be stopped.

Five-year cost example

System Illustrative starting cost Recurring fees Five-year example
Self-monitored kit $250 $0 $250 before maintenance
Monitored kit $250 $25/month $1,750 before maintenance
Camera with cloud plan $120 $10/month $720 before maintenance

These are arithmetic illustrations, not quotations or current market prices. Include installation, batteries, replacement hardware, taxes and contract cancellation charges when comparing real offers.

When I’d prioritize an alarm

Consider one when doors and windows are already reasonably secure but you need a way to learn about intrusion while asleep or away. Check the failure behavior when internet or power is unavailable, the sensor coverage and how false alarms are handled.

When cameras add more value

You do not need an expensive package to test whether camera coverage is useful at a particular entrance. Our budget outdoor camera buying guide explains the tradeoffs between plug-in and battery models, local recording and monthly fees before you commit to a larger system.

Video may help with deliveries, repeated property damage or checking events at an entrance. Placement, storage and privacy settings matter more than the camera count. See where to put cameras and the privacy considerations.

Don’t neglect basic hardware

If the back door has a loose frame or the ground-floor window does not latch, start there. Read our home burglary prevention guide and budget security plan.

The right system should solve a clearly identified problem at a total cost you can comfortably maintain. A simpler system you understand and test regularly is often more valuable than an elaborate setup with disabled alerts.
